Pet-Friendly Living: Questions to Ask Before Signing

Finding a pet-friendly apartment is only half the battle. You also need to ensure the building's policies work for your long-term life with your furry friend. Here are the questions you must ask.

1. Are there breed or weight restrictions?

Many "pet-friendly" buildings actually have strict lists of prohibited breeds or weight limits (often 25 or 50 lbs). Get this in writing before you apply.

2. What are the additional fees?

Expect to pay either a monthly "pet rent" or a one-time "pet deposit." In NYC, security deposits are capped at one month's rent, so many landlords now use pet rent instead.

3. Is there a limit on the number of pets?

Most landlords allow one or two pets. If you have a multi-pet household, clarify this early to avoid wasting time on applications.

4. Where are the nearest green spaces?

Living near a dog park or a large park like Central or Prospect Park will make your life significantly easier. Check the neighborhood map for pet-friendly amenities.

5. Are there common areas where pets are restricted?

Some luxury buildings have incredible roof decks or lounges but prohibit pets in those spaces. If those amenities are why you're paying a premium, make sure your pet can enjoy them too!
